Corkscrew Maintenance Guide

Please take a moment to discover your new corkscrew and appreciate the work of the makers.

To ensure the longevity of your Forge de Laguiole product, we recommend reading our maintenance guide prior to use. Your corkscrew requires just a minimum amount of care to stay in excellent condition.

Please avoid contact with water and never put your corkscrew in the dishwasher. Your Laguiole sommelier knife should be wiped clean, not washed. Natural wood or horn handles are sensitive to moisture, therefore, always store your knife in a dry place.

To care for the metal components, including the solid stainless steel bolsters, simply wipe them with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry them immediately. While these parts are easy to maintain, please handle them with care: the metal finish can be scratched if it comes into contact with other metal objects, such as keys or coins.

To ensure the smooth operation of your sommelier knife, occasionally apply a drop of oil (either a 3-in-1 multi-purpose oil or vegetable oil) to the mechanism. With the knife in the closed position, apply the oil to the joint of the blade and the corkscrew. Open and close the knife to distribute the lubricant evenly, then wipe away any excess.

When opening a bottle, insert the screw vertically into the center of the cork. Stop just before the screw is fully inserted to avoid piercing through the bottom of the cork. Always keep the corkscrew aligned with the axis of the bottle neck; twisting it sideways may weaken the metal.

Rely on the lever to extract the cork smoothly while maintaining this alignment.

  • Wooden Handles: Wood naturally develops a slight patina over time. To protect the finish and maintain its beautiful lustre, we recommend occasionally nourishing the wood with a small amount of linseed oil.

  • Horn & Deer Antler Handles: As an organic material, horn is highly sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations. To prevent damage, please store your horn-handled knife in a dry place at room temperature.

  • Acrylic, Fabric & Synthetic Handles: These materials offer durability and effortless maintenance. They are less sensitive than natural materials; a simple wipe with a damp cloth followed by a dry cloth is all that is needed.

  • Bone Handles: Special care must be taken during storage. Do not leave the knife inside a leather sheath for long periods, as the chemicals used in leather tanning can permanently stain the porous bone.
