If you are looking for a handle that exudes sleek, monochromatic luxury, Dark Horn is the definitive answer. Often referred to in the trade as "Black Horn," this material is prized for its ability to achieve a jet-black, mirror-like finish that rivals the finest grand pianos.
Visually, it is the epitome of understated elegance. While it may appear opaque at a distance, a closer look under bright light often reveals subtle, smoky translucencies or faint charcoal grains that prove it is a natural material rather than synthetic. It is exceptionally smooth and warm to the touch, offering a sensual feel that cold plastics or metals simply cannot replicate.
Where can it be found? This material is sourced from the solid tips of horns from the Zebu (Cebu) cow. Unlike the hollow base of the horn, the tip is solid, heavy and incredibly hard. By utilising this specific dense section, craftsmen ensure the handle is tough enough to last a lifetime while maintaining a consistent, deep colour.
Where else is it used? Before the invention of modern plastics, Dark Horn was the world's go-to material for high-contrast luxury accessories. It has been used for centuries to create high-end buttons for bespoke suits, combs and the frames of luxury eyewear. In traditional archery, its immense compression strength made it a key component in the belly of composite bows.
Did you know? Dark Horn is one of the few natural materials that can be polished to a high gloss without the use of any varnish, lacquer, or chemical sealants. The shine you see is entirely natural, created solely by sanding the keratin fibres to a microscopic smoothness. This means the finish will never "chip" off, if it dulls over the years, a simple buffing cloth is all it takes to bring back its original midnight luster.
