For a handle that offers superior grip and a direct connection to the wild, Deer Antler (often called Stag) is the premier choice. It bridges the gap between rugged utility and aristocratic tradition, offering a material that is as tough as it is beautiful. Unlike wood, which is warm and smooth, antler is cool, hard, and rich in texture.
Visually, no two antler handles are ever alike. The material is prized for its rough outer surface—known as the "bark"—which features natural ridges, grooves, and "pearls" (bumpy nodules). This uneven surface provides exceptional traction in the hand, making it a favourite for outdoor tools and hunting knives. Over time, the high points of the antler polish to a creamy white, while the recesses retain a dark, amber hue, creating a striking contrast.
Where can it be found? This material is sourced directly from the wild forests of France. Crucially, Forge de Laguiole adheres to strict ethical standards: all antler is collected only after the deer have naturally shed them. The material is gathered from the forest floor, ensuring that the harvesting process is sustainable and completely harmless to the animal.
Where else is it used? Deer antler has been a staple material for centuries. Beyond cutlery, it is a traditional material for buttons on high-quality hunting jackets and Bavarian folk wear. You will also see it used in interior design for rustic chandeliers and furniture, as well as in the art of scrimshaw, where intricate designs are carved directly into the smooth surface of the bone.
Did you know? Antlers are true marvels of biology and are the only mammalian bone structures that completely regenerate every year. After the mating season, the deer casts off its antlers, and a new set begins to grow almost immediately. This growth is incredibly rapid—in the height of spring, Red Deer antlers can grow up to 2.5 centimetre (1 inch) per day, making them one of the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom.
