If you want a handle that redefines the concept of "vintage," Fossilized Oak is the ultimate choice. This is not merely wood, it is a geological rarity. Buried in riverbeds and peat bogs for approximately 5,000 years, this timber has begun the slow transition from organic matter to mineral, offering a profound connection to the ancient world.

Visually, this material is dark, dense, and commanding. It is available in two variations:

  • The Heart: This is the core wood itself. It is polished and smooth, showcasing deep, warm antique brown hues that feel as solid as rock.

  • The Bark: For a more rugged aesthetic, we offer the exterior bark. Like the Aubrac Cow Horn and Barrel Oak, this handle features a flat surface design. This deliberate shaping preserves the original, craggy texture of the ancient bark, allowing you to feel the raw history of the tree against your palm.

Where can it be found? This specific material is sourced from the banks and beds of the Rhine River and its surrounding areas in Europe. These massive oak trees fell into the water millennia ago, where they were buried under sediment and preserved in an oxygen-free environment.

Where else is it used? Fossilised Oak (often called "Morta") is a holy grail material for high-end pipe makers. Because the wood is partially mineralised, it is incredibly heat resistant and imparts a neutral, cool smoke. It is also used in jewellery making and for accents in luxury furniture.

To put the age of this handle into perspective, when this tree was a sapling growing on the banks of the Rhine, the Great Pyramids of Giza had not yet been built, and woolly mammoths were still walking the Earth. Holding this knife is literally holding a piece of the world as it existed at the very dawn of human civilisation.
